'chibra' and 'snipencelly8' emerged as winners on Saturday evening from a total of 322 participants in the Latvian qualification for the 2020 IIHF Esports Fan Championship.
Seven matches had to be won by 'chibra' on the PlayStation 4 to earn the right to represent Latvia in the playoffs. After receiving a walk-through in round one, he made a statement in his first game: beating 'Edza' 20-0 in the opening game. This was followed by a 9:2 win against 'LATMairis', a 10:0 against 'druvberijs', a 7:0 against 'GachisLAT' and an 8:3 against 'Zarjazen_17'. The final entry was secured by 'chibra' thanks to another 5:0 victory over 'Martins'. In the final he faced 'ivandublin', who had also made it to the final with some impressive wins.. However, 'chibra' controlled the game and beat 'ivandublin' 7:2. His 66 goals in seven games leave no doubt that Latvia have found a worthy representative for the playoffs.
The same can be said about 'snipencelly8': On the Xbox One he won his final game against 'Uldis Pupols' also with by a score of 7:2. The winner of the qualifier only made his semi-final a bit tighter, against 'reeusy' he had to fight 4:2. The previous two rounds, however, were dominated by 'snipencelly8', 'Girgis23' and 'Alwins LV' each lost 2:15. Already the opening game against 'Juxik' was 9:0, after which 'LVSmsNick' (6:0) and 'Peteris' (4:1) were eliminated. With a goal difference of 60:9 'snipencelly8' determined the qualifier on the Microsoft console. In combination with 'chibra', the Latvians can pose a serous challenge for the 15 other participating nations.
Along with a playoff berth, both of Latvia’s PS4 and Xbox national champions won two tickets to go see their country compete on home ice at the 2021 Ice Hockey World Championship, as well as an IIHF Esports Fan Championship Puck and 100 euros cash prize.
