Italy gets going: Ice hockey tradition meets Esports
by Christian Bellinger/Alexander Maier
Italian ice hockey fans are proud of the achievements of their national team - the IIHF Esports Fan Championship gives them the opportunity to represent their country on the virtual ice themselves.
Since 1930, the Italian national ice hockey team has participated in 56 world championships. Although it has never been enough for a place on the podium, the team still enjoys a high reputation in this otherwise mainly football-mad country. In recent years, the southern European selection has developed into a real elevator team: the team has slipped down again and again in Division I, and in most cases they managed a direct promotion the following year. In 2020, Italy will unfortunately not be able to play for class retention at the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship due to the coronavirus pandemic, but fans will be able to hold up their beloved Italian flag in virtual comparison at the IIHF Esports Fan Championship.

Italy's playoff participants will be determined in the qualifiers on Sunday from 7pm (UTC+2) in two tournaments - one on the PlayStation 4 and one on the Xbox One. The competition is open to all Italian citizens aged 16 and over currently living in Europe. They will first compete in a national knockout tournament in 1vs1 mode in EA SPORTS™’ NHL™ 20 on their favourite console.
They will play exclusively with the Italian national team and the two winners will qualify for the international competition. There they will meet the best gamers from the other participating countries, including neighbours from Switzerland, who share many hockey traditions with Italy. In addition to the privilege of representing their country at the Fan Championship, the qualifier winners can look forward to further valuable prizes: two tickets each to see Team Italy at the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship 2021, an IIHF Esports Fan Championship Puck and 100 euros prize money.
