Qualification tournament in Norway begins

Kick-off for the Scandinavian underdog

by Christian Bellinger/Alexander Maier

Preview
Norway, one of the ice hockey nations in northern Europe, is often overshadowed by its neighbours Sweden and Finland in international tournaments - but this may change on virtual ice.

The last three World Championships all went to the Nordic countries: in 2017 and 2018 Sweden won, in 2019 Finland secured the title. Already in the years before, the two neighbours had been competing for medals. The Norwegian national team has always been a little overshadowed by the two Nordic powerhouses, but still shows remarkable performances at international tournaments: Since 2006, the Norwegians have been playing in the top division of the World Championships, and they have also qualified for the last three Olympic Winter Games. Although they have never reached better than 6th place in recent years, this could change at the 2020 IIHF Esports Fan Championship on the virtual ice of EA SPORTS™ NHL™ 20.

Because the Norwegian national team can rely on a large following, the fans on Tuesday will, starting at 5pm (UTC+2), first determine their representatives for the playoffs in two national qualification tournaments. One tournament will be played on Xbox One and one on PlayStation 4. The only conditions for participation: The players must be from Norway, currently living in Europe and be at least 16 years old. To avoid any advantages and disadvantages, all opponents will play with the Norwegian national team. The two winners will meet the best NHL™ 20 players from the remaining World Cup nations. In addition to the honour of representing their home country in an international comparison, the qualifier winners will also be awarded other considerable prizes: two tickets each for a match of the Norwegian national team at the 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, 100 euros prize money and an IIHF Esports Fan Championship puck.
