Sweden can virtually reclaim the throne
by Niklas Aßfalg/Christian Bellinger
In 2019 the Swedish national team lost its world championship title. But this time, it is up to their fans to lead the ice hockey nation back to the promised land by winning the first-ever IIHF Esports Fan Championship.
Sweden has already crowned itself as ice hockey world champion four times in the 21st century, the last time coming in back-to-back 2017 and 2018 titles. However, the 2019 World Championship resulted in fifth place, not enough by Swedish standards (top of that the title went to rival neighbours Finland). There is no chance of compensation in 2020 for Gabriel Landeskog, Henrik Lundqvist & Co., this year's World Cup has been cancelled. Instead, hopes rest on the Swedish fans, who can climb to the top at the IIHF Esports Fan Championship in EA SPORTS™ NHL™ 20. The opponents will represent all 16 nations qualified for the World Championship, and will compete against each other on the virtual ice. The two qualifiers for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will determine the Swedish representatives on Friday at 5pm (UTC+2).
