Who represents Latvia at the IIHF Esports Fan Championship?
by Christian Bellinger/Alexander Maier
Ice hockey fans from Latvia belong to the absolute world elite - at the IIHF Esports Fan Championship they can prove their talent on the virtual ice.
After the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation was refounded in 1992, the national team needed four tournaments to qualify for the A-World Championship. Since 1997, Latvia has been a permanent guest in the illustrious round of international top teams. Although it has never been able to achieve a significant ranking - the team can only boast three seventh places - the Latvian supporters are regarded as one of the best fan groups in the world. Several thousand Latvian supporters regularly make the pilgrimage to major international events to support their team. If the fans can transfer this enthusiasm to the virtual ice, then there is nothing to stop Latvia from doing well at the IIHF Esports Fan Championship.

The two Latvian representatives will be determined at the qualifiers on Saturday. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 tournaments will begin simultaneously at 7pm (UTC+3). All Latvian citizens resident in Europe and aged 16 or over are eligible to participate. EA SPORTS™' NHL™ 20 will be played in 1vs1 format with the Latvian national team. The respective winners of the qualifiers will then form the duo that will represent Latvia in the playoffs in direct comparison with the other World Cup nations.
A duel against the neighbours from Belarus and Russia would be particularly attractive - at least on real ice, the young Latvian Ice Hockey Federation has already managed to defeat the seemingly overpowering Russian team several times. However, the winners of the qualifiers not only make it to the playoffs, but also receive high-quality prizes: The two players will each receive two tickets to see Latvia at the 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, 100 euros prize money and an IIHF Esports Fan Championship puck.
